I’m always playing with different language to talk about the work I do as a coach. And, it’s always evolving, so it’s important to update for my own authentic expression, and for clients to have something to sink their teeth into. As I did a spin ride this morning, the teacher was talking about the language she uses: I am, I can, I will, I do. And I thought ‘I can frame the way I coach in that language as well.’ So, here’s my take on putting the process I walk through with clients into that frame. I like it. Here it is:
We start with where you are. That includes who you are in this moment in its totality. Putting words to this can be very powerful, as it includes who you’ve been, and also the vastness and possibility of who you are at this juncture. There is an inclusion of all you’ve been through, and allowing the paradox of who you know yourself to be as strong, more expansive and powerful than the small voices, and… sometimes scared. And strong. Even to name these disparate parts starts to bring a wholeness, and we breathe a little deeper. As we include the whole landscape, a grounding happens. And that is a good place to move forward from.
Then we look at what you can do. What is possible for you here? Together, we lean hard into that space of possibility, giving your being full reign to see and feel those possibilities. To lean out of the voices of doubt or fear and just make a little room to dance. I can… I can… I can… Those are powerful words.
And here we start to find your heart’s language for what it is you are wanting right now. The words that deeply resonate in you. This is an intimate stage. To be willing to really hear what it is you want. I think we all know what we really want, but it can take some support and courage to listen to that voice and own it. Over and over again. And we each have unique language for how desire speaks through us. As your coach, I help you find the language that resonates with you, because that’s what will pull you forward. And then we commit to these things. I will…
Then comes the action. I do. And together we play with what each action and commitment looks like for you. And it’s different than homework in school, because it’s flexible. It’s more like research. You come back to a session and we look at how it went. What else did you discover? What needs to shift? But we have the foundation of knowing who you are and what you want, and that grounds you in knowing what you’re moving toward.
